IGCSE Physics Measurement Questions

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this section, you will be able to:

  • Read scales for rulers and measuring cylinders.
  • Measure the length of various objects
  • Read- of the volume of liquids using measuring cylinders.

Here is an image that tells you how to read the scales of rulers and measuring cylinders. 

Instructions to find the value of each division:

Rules for finding the value of each division on a ruler:

  • Count the number of divisions between two consecutive numbers on the scale
  • In the above image of a ruler, there are 10 divisions between 2 consecutive numbers
  • Finally divide 1by 10 to get 0.1. Thus the value of each division is 0.1cm

 The same method applies for measuring any given scale. 

Some useful alternative to practical [ atp]  tips for  Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 and 0971 (9-1) :

  • Always keep your line of sight perpendicular to the scale being read to avoid pparallax error.
  • Repeat and take averages to improve the accuracy of the results.
